1 | The Tasmania State Emergency Service provides a |
---|
2 | volunteer response capability for severe storms and floods, |
---|
3 | road crash rescue, search and rescue/recovery and a range of other |
---|
4 | general rescue and community support roles. |
---|
5 | In addition the SES provides whole of government |
---|
6 | advice and executive support to the State Disaster Committee |
---|
7 | and Region Disaster Planning Groups. |
---|
8 | It also takes the lead with much of the State's emergency |
---|
9 | management planning and emergency risk management |
---|
10 | work\footnote{http://www.ses.tas.gov.au}. |
---|
11 | Such work involves understanding the relative risk |
---|
12 | of a range of natural disasters so that resources can be directed to appropriate areas |
---|
13 | and corresponding evacuation plans put in place. |
---|
14 | |
---|
15 | The key role of the Risk Research Group at Geoscience Australian |
---|
16 | is to develop knowledge on the risk from natural and |
---|
17 | human-caused hazards for input to policy and operational decision making on |
---|
18 | the mitigation of risk to Australian communities. The Group achieves |
---|
19 | this through the development of computational methods, models and decision |
---|
20 | support tools that assess the hazard, vulnerability and risk posed by hazard |
---|
21 | events. To develop an understanding of the tsunami risk, GA has developed |
---|
22 | decision support tools, consisting of inundation |
---|
23 | maps overlaid on aerial photography of the region |
---|
24 | detailing critical infrastructure as well as damage modelling estimates. |
---|
25 | |
---|
26 | This report supports the Tasmania State Government's Natural Disaster |
---|
27 | Mitigation Programme project on understanding tsunami risk to Tasmania. |
---|
28 | In particular, |
---|
29 | the work presented will support paloetsunami investigations to understand |
---|
30 | the history of tsunami impact to Tasmania. This support provides a tsunami |
---|
31 | inundation model based on a plausible event occurring on the Puysegur Trench |
---|
32 | (see Section \ref{sec:methodology}). |
---|
33 | |
---|
34 | The modelling technique to simulate the |
---|
35 | impact ashore is discussed in Section \ref{sec:methodology} and data inputs |
---|
36 | discussed in Section \ref{sec:data}. |
---|
37 | The inundation results are presented and discussed in Section \ref{sec:results}. |
---|
38 | A summary of the results detailing issues |
---|
39 | regarding underlying data and further model development, are discussed |
---|
40 | in Section \ref{sec:summary}. |
