2This report is being provided to the Fire and Emergency Services Authority
3(FESA)
[3098]4as part of the Collaborative Research Agreement (CRA)
5with Geoscience Australia.
[2950]6FESA recognises the potential vulnerability of the Western Australia
7coastline to tsunamigenic earthquakes originating from
8the Sunda Arc subduction zone. There is
[3016]9historic evidence of such events, \cite{CB:ausgeo},
[3015]10and FESA has sought to assess
[2950]11the relative risk of its urban and regional communities to the tsunami
12threat and develop detailed response plans.
13
14This report is the first in a series of studies to assess the relative
15risk to the tsunami threat. The methods, assumptions and results of a
16single tsunami source scenario is described for the Onslow area in the
[3024]17North West shelf region.
18Onslow has a population of around 800
19is part of the Shire of Ashburton in the Pilbara region of Western Autralia
20\footnote{http://www.pdc.wa.gov.au/region/political.htm}. Onslow supports
[3064]21a variety of industries, including oil, gas, mining, cattle,
22fishing and tourism.
[3024]23
[3064]24The report will outline the methods of modelling the tsunami from its
[3137]25source to its impact ashore. Section \ref{sec:tsunamiscenario} provides
[3064]26the background to the scenario used for this study. Whilst
27the return period of this scenario is unknown, it
28can be be classed as a plausible event.
29Future studies
30will present a series of scenarios for a range of periods to
31assist FESA in developing appropriate plans for a range of event impacts.
32The modelling technique to develop the
33impact ashore will be discussed in Section \ref{sec:anuga} with data inputs
34discussed in Section \ref{sec:data}.
35Inundation results shown in Section \ref{sec:results} and
[3139]36impact modelling results shown in Section \ref{sec:impact}.
[3064]37The report concludes with a summary of the results detailing issues
[3098]38regarding data and further model development.
