Work on Patong Beach validation

Reported by: ole Owned by: john
Priority: high Milestone: Validation of GA tsunami modelling methodology
Component: Testing and validation Version:
Severity: normal Keywords: URS boundary
Cc:

Description (last modified by ole)

  • Use 400 sqm resolution on beach instead of 100 sqm. Verify smoothing artefacts gone.
  • Decrease yieldsteps to 5s on a coarse grid to compare timeseries
  • Verify URS (mux2) and ANUGA time series from boundary into beach at identical points. They should be almost identical near boundary. Check also timing of wave arrivals.
  • Most and URS sources appear to be different. Check source parameters from Diana Greenslade's paper (John) and communicate with Richard and David (Ole)
  • If we see attenuation due to resolution, try running Edge_limiter + RK2 option.

Following the great results done in late June, here's a plan forward:

  • Run the URS (Chileh)-ANUGA combo with tide = 0.35m
  • Run the same script with the old bathymetry and compare to the new
  • Look at tide gauges where available (maybe a run for Taphao Noi)
  • Look at run-up values as in the table used last time round
  • Make a run with very fine time steps for use with a Houdini viz-bang animation. This will need the Quick bird imagery we have here at GA
  • Possibly include buildings in the above
  • Write the journal paper and submit it
  • Roll the validation and all supporting data into the ANUGA distribution

  • compare URS and ANUGA time series for a "line of gauges". This has been done near the boundary and it would be good to do the comparison far into the domain. This will serve two purposes (1) ensure ANUGA is not dissipating the wave (which would required using RK2 method and (2) investigate where the two models deviate and link this to the bathymetry value, i.e. do the models change in around 20m of water? A matrix of points from URS were supplied for testing purposes.
